Indian Administrative Service or IAS whom we know by several other names or post such as district magistrate(DM), collector, secretary, joint secretary, principal secretary etcetera according to the need and experience which we happen to hear in our common or regional language.

Indian Administrative Service comes under the aegis of Ministry of Personnel Training and Grievances.

IAS works as a bridge between the government and the public by bringing the policy and its benefit to the citizens of our country. They help the government of the day to govern and administer the state and the nation as a whole.

It is one of the most responsible job where one gets the opportunity to serve the people on ground. An IAS is responsible for bringing old age pension to the deprived to serve the elitist of the population.
Generally the post of director or magistrate shoulders huge responsibility.

The IAS with great vision can change the landscape in the very positive and progressive direction.

What to do to become an IAS officer ?

Person who desires to help this country as an IAS needs to pass certain criteria and exam. The exam to select IAS is conducted by UPSC every mid-year.

The exam itself has three phases which is prelims in which you will be asked objective questions and aptitude test along with general reasoning and mental ability. This is a whole day exam divided into two papers where you need to secure only 33% marks in aptitude also called CSAT and in first paper one needs to secure as much as possible according the changing cutoff marks on an yearly basis.

On passing this phage you will proceed for mains where you will be asked subjective questions in a subject of your choice and general awareness and subject followed by essay ethics and basic test of English and your language of choice. This mains exam comprises of seven papers totaling 1750 marks. The marks secured will be counted for ranking.

On qualifying this phase you will proceed for interview or personality test which will be of 275 marks. Final list will be prepared by counting the marks secured in mains and interview.

In the last decade the trend has been such that nearly 50% marks gives you chance to get selected. Once you are selected with good ranks you get opportunity to choose the field of your choice of service like IAS IPS IFS etc.

Post Selection and Training

According to choice of your service you are sent to the training like IAS in Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie. For IPS you will be sent to Hyderabad for training. After completing the training you are allotted posting in the choice of cadre or as per availability of the seat.

After posting you start to get salary and other perks which are entitled to your post. Generally residential complex, a vehicle, helper and driver are provided to IAS to help them in day to day life.
